2024 Gold coast open
11 GOLD — 5 SILVER — 1 BRONZE
EVENT SUMMARY (4th and 5th May)
This year Sun Bae had a bigger entry to the Gold Coast Open as more students were interested to participate in a semi international tournament. Sun Bae were well represented by students of all ranks from yellow to black belt as well as all ages from junior to master division. In the junior division, especially blue belt, the competition was very tough. However, Jio Kang managed to fend off 5 other competitors to win Gold! Anunt Ghoshal faced a similar situation and managed to secure Silver. Medals of any colour is a great achievement in a big division. It was a great improvement in terms of poomsae scores achieved this year compared to last. Many of Sun Bae students scored close to 6 and above. The scores reflect accuracy of technique (4 points) and presentation (6 points). Our students scored well in accuracy, meaning technique correctness was high. As for presentation, we will have to work on it more for future tournaments. Congratulations again to all competitors! Big thank you to all instructors and especially GM Bradley for guiding your students. We also thank the organiser Master Carlos and event patron GM Michael Tan.
Additional Note from GM Bradley:
I congratulate the Sun Bae Team for their amazing effort. I understand that we had 14 players and each player earned a medal. Some of our divisions were very exciting, with players even from other countries - all very high standard. Congratulations to those masters who trained them as well.
I encourage all Sun Bae students to practice poomsae and take the next step to enter a tournament. It’s definitely a great experience (win or lose).
THOUGHTS FROM MASTER SHIRLY
I am extremely proud of all our competitors for making the extra effort in training to prepare for this event. We truly have a high standard at Sun Bae and we should never lose this legacy. Such events can truly test a student's confidence and resolve. It is not unusual that players make more mistakes under pressure. However, this is truly how we learn and more importantly, also one of the many ways we overcome our fears. I encourage all Sun Bae Students to train hard for yourself and should the opportunity arise, perhaps enter into competition one day! See you in October!
