ABOUT INSTRUCTOR BRENDAN
Instructor Brendan Whish began his journey with Sunbae in late 2017. He began as a white belt training at Jamboree Heights under the guidance of several instructors, including Instructor Dean, Instructor Chris, and Grand Master Bradley.
As the Jamboree Heights club became the Middle Park club, he continued his training under Instructor Lloyd and Instructor Michael. Even as a white belt he dedicated spare nights to taekwondo, taking up extra lessons under Instructor Shirly at either the Kenmore or Newmarket clubs.
Even as a white belt he showed a high level of focus, dedication, and etiquette, as well as technical skill in both basic and complex techniques, achieving honours at every grading as a gup student. At the annual competitions he has achieved a bronze, silver, and gold medal in Poomsae (patterns). This technical aptitude flowed into Hapkido, where he has since achieved 3rd gup, with the eventual goal of Black Belt being within reach.
He started attending private training sessions under Grand Master Bradley in August 2021, with the intent being to assist with instructing Sun Bae clubs if necessary. This process also involved assistant instructing at the Middle Park club. He succeeded in his black belt grading in March 2022, receiving the rank of First Dan Bo with honours. He fully achieved the black belt rank of First Dan in July 2023.
As of January 2022, he has taken over as the instructor of the Middle Park club, running classes for juniors, adults and families, as well as specialized advanced classes. His goal as instructor was achieved when one of his first ever students, Mikayla K., achieved her 1st Dan Bo Black Belt at the 2025 March grading, where Instructor Brendan achieved his 2nd Dan Bo Black Belt at the same grading.
Starting in 2022, he has led several demonstrations with students from the Middle Park and Kenmore clubs. These demonstrations showed a range of technical skills and abilities from students of many ranks, including even yellow belts and junior students.
