GOLF GOLF GOLF!
(Sat Arvo 9 July)

Yes! Sun Bae 18 Hole Par 3 Scramble - thats where you play in a team of 4 and you hit the best shot. So apparently you can rely on your partners to get the job done! In any case, don't worry, we are playing at the finest short hole hacker course in Brisbane, so you won't need to be good. It won't take long to go around as the holes are all short par 3 (longest is 105m). Handicaps will be estimated for those who do not have a Golflink number. Teams will be made up within your Sun Bae centre, so let your coach now who you wish to team up with. Students, coaches, parents and friends are welcome, but booking is essential as it is a team event and places are limited. After golfing, there will be a BBQ provided and prizes to award!

SELF DEFENCE TIP

Park your car at night in as much light as possible or in a busy area. When walking to your car, hold your keys appropriately. But remember, jabbing a key into an attacker may be considered the use of a weapon, so use common sense. If you have an alarm, it probably has a distress button. Have it at hand before anything happens. Alternatively, ladies often have clutch style bags they can hold. Lastly and importantly, always check the back seat for anyone who might be hiding there. If you ever find yourself in the boot compartment, the tail lights can be knocked out, allowing your arm to wave for help.

By the way, if you are ever carjacked and are forced to drive on, the statistics are that he culprit rarely puts on their seatbelt and most cars have air bags (at least on the drivers side). You do the math on what happens next.....

NEWMARKET CENTRE

We welcome back Master Greg Tatnell, who will be instructing at Newmarket centre from January 2011. Greg is a 4th Dan Taekwondo and 1st Dan Hapkido black belt. Greg was the original founder of Newmarket. We also thank Master Jet Lee together with Instructor Blake Walker who have maintained the centre whilst Greg was in North Queensland. Notably, under their care, Newmarket placed 3rd in the 2010 club championships.

TRIALS FOR BLACK BELT

Sun Bae has a unique method of preparing students for their journey from 1st gup (red III) to black belt. It is not an easy journey and nor is it swift, but it is rewarding. This grading of course requires more preparation than ever before and the standard set is of the highest level. It is interesting to note that some Taekwondo schools don't break double (or back to back boards) at black belt gradings anymore, whilst Sun Bae includes that feat for students at age 15 and over. At Sun Bae, single board breaking is a grading requirement introduced as early as blue belt. This makes sense and the end result is high quality black belts. Last club championship, coaches (some who weigh <80kg) were demonstrating breaking of 5 (19mm each) boards, back to back. A reminder that your first black belt is really only the beginning.

To date, the black belt trials program has been very helpful in bringing out the best in our 1st gups. It has also been a great test of their fortitude and perserverance. A reminder of the tenents of Taekwondo (Modesty, Control, Spirit & Perserverance) and why we are training ourselves in this wonderful art. Notably, the 2010 year proved very successful, a credit to all the coaches. We look forward to an interesting 2011.

SELF DEFENCE TIP...

If you look for trouble you will find it. The best defence is to not put yourself into troublesome or compromising situations. Assess your surroundings at all times and think ahead. Even Master Instructors avoid the proverbial "alley way" late at night...
